José Antonio Burciaga was a Chicano artist, poet, essayist, journalist, and humorist who explored issues of Chicano identity and American society. His versatility in all these forms was in exploring two cultures—Chicano and American. He was born in El Paso, Texas, and earned his B.A. in Fine Arts there from the University of Texas. In addition to his writings, Burciaga was a well–known muralist and a founding member of Latino comedy troupe, Culture Clash. He was given the Hispanic Heritage Award for Literature. Burciaga died in 1996.
